(abstract)To implement ceramics into high reliability components, it is necessary to understand the strength scatter, which is caused by stochastic distribution of defects in ceramics. In this study, we proposed a numerical simulation method to predict the strength scatter of ceramics, including size-dependency, by combining internal microstructural data observed using X-ray computed tomography (X-Ray CT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with a fracture mechanics model. In particular, the Generalized Pareto (GP) model, a type of extreme value statistics, was applied to the treatment of three-dimensional distribution of size of pores, which might be origin of fracture. We then predict the bending strength of four kinds of bending test with different effective volumes and conmapred with exprimental results. In addition, the predictive performance for the lower limit of fracture strength was also discussed. Meanwhile, the method was also applied to specimen models with different discretization sizes to verify the advantage of GP model. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for ‘specimen size dependence of bending strength’ and ‘specimen discretization size independence’.
