本論文では、1700 MPa級調質ボルトについて、日本ウエザリングテストセンター(JWTC)宮古島試験場での10年間の暴露試験結果、さらにこれを再現したつくば市の物質・材料研究機構(NIMS)構内での暴露試験の結果をまとめたうえで、大気暴露試験でボルト軸部の軸力の変化測定からき裂発生から破断に至る遅れ破壊過程を観察して破面形態と関連付けて議論した。
