(abstract)

We developed a high efficiency heat shielding and UV blocking hybrid material composed of Cesium doped tungsten oxide (CWO) nanoparticles and metal-free carbon dots (CDs) in a thin film called CWO-CDs hereon. Carbon dots act as highly efficient UV-A (315-400 nm) blocker while promoting aggregation of CWO nanoparticles. CWO nanoparticles are bound by the free functional groups found attached to the carbon core of carbon dots. This mechanism of aggregation by carbon dots increases porosity of the hybrid CWO-CDs film forming clusters and pores. These pores act as cavities increasing light-matter interactions. This leads to an enhanced near infra-red absorption. CWO-CDs thin film reached maximum solar heat blocking efficiencies of 91.2% in the near infra-red and 85% in the UV-A while maintaining optimum visible transparency. When applied to a house model, it could lower indoor temperatures as large as 12 degrees Celsius while also protecting from harmful UV-A radiation, ensuring effective applications to windows and skylights.
