Description:
(abstract)The cross-section of thermally exfoliated “Vermiculite” was investigated using thin sections made by the novel dry-polishing method. Two samples of “Vermiculite” from Palabora, the Republic of South Africa, and from Ono-machi, Fukushima, Japan, were used as starting materials. The “Vermiculite” was flash-heated at 900ºC and kept for 30 minutes, and then quenched to the ambient condition. The sample before and after heating was checked by the powder XRD method. The thin sections of the exfoliated “Vermiculite” were observed by optical microscopy. The exfoliation structure is the combination of 2 types of pore structure with different dimensions. The first one is the aggregation of the expanded structures related to the mosaic distribution in a few hundred m of the different clay minerals within the particle, which is consistent with the results by Hiller et al. (2013). The second one in mm-scale is the aggregation of spindle-shaped pore structure, which is assembled by the first pore structure. The whole exfoliation structure is related to the domain structure of the original biotite.
