We are developing a laser spectroscopy technique called OROCHI (Optical RI-atom Observation in Condensed Helium as Ion-catcher) to study the nuclear structure of short-lived and low-yield radioisotopes produced at accelerator facilities. In OROCHI, ion beams are injected into superfluid helium (He II), where the ions are slowed down, stopped in a narrow region, and neutralized with almost 100% efficiency. From the measurements of the Zeeman / hyperfine splitting energy using the laser -radio frequency (laser-RF) / laser-microwave (MW) double resonance, nuclear spins and nuclear moments can be derived. The feasibility of this method to measure the hyperfine structure splitting energy with an accuracy of six orders of magnitude has been demonstrated in off-line experiments on Cs atoms. It is therefore expected to be a promising method for application to short-lived unstable nuclei.
