Using superhydrophobic microwells fabricated by cutting macroporous monoliths, we developed a fabrication method that allows anyone to fabricate and mature cancer spheroids. The biological behavior of the fabricated breast cancer spheroids was evaluated under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. The spheroids obtained by this method were highly reproducible and functioned as 3D tumor tissues even after a short culture period. The method has a wide range of potential applications in cancer research, such as elucidating the mechanisms of tumor invasion and metastasis, and screening for anticancer drugs.

モノリス型多孔体の切削により作製された超撥水性マイクロウェルを用い、誰でもがんスフェロイドを作製・成熟させることができる作製法を開発した。また、作製した乳がんスフェロイドの生物学的挙動を、正常酸素条件下および低酸素条件下で評価した。本作製法で得られたスフェロイドは再現性が高く、短い培養期間でも3次元腫瘍組織として機能した。腫瘍の浸潤や転移のメカニズムの解明、抗がん剤のスクリーニングなど、がん研究において幅広い応用可能性がある。
