Description:

(abstract)

Surface-modified particles and microgels are recognized for adsorbing at the air/water interface. This particle assembly behavior has been evaluated primarily under conditions where all the particles are adsorbed using a dilute dispersion. In this study, we visualized the adsorption/stabilization process of particle assemblies at the air/water interface in a concentrated dispersion through structural coloration. Melanin particles coated with a gel layer were prepared, and these aqueous dispersions were dried. Pronounced coffee ring patterns with almost no particle deposition in the center of the pattern were obtained from pristine melanin particle dispersions. On the other hand, the use of polymer gel-coated particles suppressed the coffee ring effect and resulted in particle deposition not only around the pattern periphery but also in the center, indicating that the assembly behavior was affected by the gel layer. The observation of structural color during the drying process revealed adsorption at the air/water interface and differences in the size and motion of the domain. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the use of this gel-coated particle is effective for structural color coating with uniform visibility.
