精密な金属ナノクラスターの制御された超分子配列は、個々の単量体ナノクラスターの特性を超えた前例のない特性と高度な機能を発現させる有望な方法である。このような集合体を構築する従来法では、ナノクラスターを保護し、かつ、相互接続するために、2種類以上のリガンドを使用する必要があった。本研究では、アルキンで保護された銀ナノクラスターが、協働的な銀∙∙∙アセチレン配位と銀∙∙∙ピリジル配位を基に、結晶格子内で三次元ネットワークに階層的に自己組織化する手法を開拓した。
