Description:
(abstract)The incipient plastic deformation behaviour of as-cast and annealed samples of Zr50Cu40Al10 (atom %) bulk metallic glass was investigated by nanoindentation. A validated load-over-displacement versus displacement plot showed the existence of a precursor event to incipient plasticity in both samples. The activation stress remained consistent in both samples, indicating that the event corresponds to local behaviour in regions with the same energy state, and it is not influenced by the overall microstructure. Conversely, the first serration detected in the as-relaxed sample exhibited a greater magnitude, potentially arising from a distinct energy-dissipation rate related to larger-scale microstructural characteristics.
