The National Institute for Materials Science, as being the only national laboratory in materials science in Japan has decided to develop a web-portal, “e-materials.net” which will support and foster research activities. The main functionalities are:· Semantic-associate search as a navigation tool and · Web-communication tools for researchers. We plan to open the beta version of the web-portal to researchers, and to continue to develop and improve it throughout 2006/2007.A Web-Portal as a Materials Science Research NetworkMikiko TanifujiNational Institute for Materials Science, Tsukuba 305-0047, JapanE-mail: tanifuji.mikiko@nims.go.jpAbstract: The National Institute for Materials Science, as being the only national laboratory in materials science in Japan has decided to develop a web-portal, “e-materials.net” which will support and foster research activities. The main functionalities are (i) semantic-associate search as a navigation tool and (ii) communication tools for researchers.KEYWORDS: web portal, semantic associate search, contents mining, navigation, materials science research, research data, database, network, community, integration of information1. Trends of web-portalsSeveral academic and government web-portals, introduced in the last two or three years, have been designed to collect and/or navigate to information from specific fields, or to locate certain information resources. Examples of such sites are: a free national gateway “Resource Discovery Network” in UK for higher education and researchers, a unified search of the government’s stores of scientific and technical information “Science.gov” in USA, an interdisciplinary web-portal for scientific and scholarly information “vascoda” in Germany, or a “Life Science Portal Site” was introduced by the minister of education, science and culture, Japan in 2005. The NIMS web-portal is a joint project with other national institutes or universities as a supporter or provider of their own information resources.2. Key functions of the NIMS web-portal· The purposes of the web-portal are to focus on scientific, patent and scholarly information in materials science, and to support research activities at all stages of their development. The key functions are:· Semantic-associate search and contents mining from various forms of web-based resources.· Display search results by category: research data or database, patents and scholarly information.· Open dictionary3. User communitiesThe web-portal provides an open/closed discussion forum for · World Materials Research Institute Forum· World Nanotechnolgy Network· Research Communities for nano-materials.We plan to open the beta version of the web-portal to researchers, and to continue to develop and improve it throughout 2006/2007.
