- description: The Materials Data Repository (MDR) was released in 2020 as one of
    the services of the DICE materials data platform. Works deposited to MDR are assigned
    DataCite DOIs, allowing integration with external services such as Data Citation
    Index. Significant effort was devoted to implement a metadata schema with a focus
    on PIDs and support for specimen, methods, and instrument metadata. A YAML-based
    schema was adopted, developed alongside a new system to natively support the new
    schema. Using works deposited to MDR as instances, we can define an ontology for
    data linking and federation. The work instance can be linked to triple graphs
    for both XAFS and HAXPES while retaining the schema. Difficulties remain in spreading
    awareness of metadata management as an ongoing effort.
