(abstract)

Development of highly luminescent two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for sensing applications remain challenging. In view of possible quenching mechanisms, we propose a strategy toward interrupting interlayer conjugation by introducing cyclohexane linker units. Experimental and theoretical analysis of the crystalline, imine-connected COFs dis-close weakened π-π stacking and suppressed bond rotation. The resulting COFs feature record-high photoluminescence quan-tum yields of up to 57%. By varying the synthetic protocol, COFs with various stacking modes and porosities are obtained, thus enabling the optimization of the sensing performance.
