(abstract)Moiré superlattices based on van der Waals layered materials have attracted significant attention due to their rich quantum phenomena and potential applications in optoelectronics. As a building block for moiré superlattices, Janus monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are promising because of their out-of-plane structural asymmetry and associated built-in electric field, which is predicted to lead to the modulation of optical dipole interactions and high-temperature exciton condensation states. However, the moiré superlattice structure of Janus heterobilayers and their excitonic properties have yet to be investigated experimentally. Here we report the structure analysis and excitonic properties of moiré superlattice of chemically-tailored Janus heterobilayers. The Janus heterobilayer MoSSe/MoSe2 (or WSSe/WSe2) was fabricated by replacement of top layer Se atoms with S atoms in bilayer MoSe2 (or WSe2) by plasma treatment. An average moiré period of approximately 13 nm was formed by lattice mismatch as revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) observations. Cryogenic temperature PL spectra show sharp, near-infrared emissions, which can be assigned to excitons trapped by moiré potentials from comparison with first-principles calculation results. Our work provides a new class moiré material for studying tunable excitonic systems and related quantum phenomena.
