説明:
(abstract)Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are wide bandgap one-dimensional nanomaterials that are promising hosts for defect-based luminescent material development. Herein, we report the formation and wavelength modulation of luminescent color centers (CCs) in BNNTs through reductive arylation. Phenyl-functionalized BNNTs exhibited new defect-related CC photoluminescence (PL) at 368 and 453 nm, respectively. Spectroscopic analyses revealed that arylation selectively formed B–C bonds, resulting in the introduction of sp³ boron defects within the BN framework for luminescent CC formation. The emission properties were modulated by the defect density: increasing the degree of aryl functionalization enhanced the contribution of longer-wavelength emission, suggesting the formation of lower-energy defect states at proximal sp³ boron defects. In addition, the CC PL wavelengths were further tuned by the electronic properties of para-substituents on the aryl groups, with electron donating substituents inducing red-shifted PL. Density functional theory calculations supported these experimental observations, showing that aryl functionalization narrows the band gap of BNNTs and that closely spaced sp³ boron defects generate lower-energy CC levels. These results demonstrate that reductive arylation provides a molecular defect-engineering strategy for controlling CC emission in BNNTs, offering a promising route toward chemically tunable nanoscale light sources based on functionalized boron nitride nanomaterials.
