## Title

- title: Red‐emitting transparent Eu3⁺‐doped fluorapatite ceramics

## Description

- description: Transparent red-emitting ceramics have attracted considerable attention
for advanced optical technologies, yet their practical applications remain limited.
In the search for new optical materials, there is increasing interest in achieving
transparency in non-cubic systems; here, we explored the fabrication of red-emitting
ceramics using fluorapatite, a non-cubic host. Eu³⁺-doped calcium and strontium
fluorapatite (Eu³⁺:FAP and Eu³⁺:S-FAP, respectively) ceramics were synthesized
via a wet-chemical route and spark plasma sintering. The ceramics sintered at
950 °C exhibited the highest transparency, achieving in-line transmittances of
81.2% and 72.9% at the red wavelength of 619 nm, and grain sizes of 98 and 153 nm,
respectively. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed that
the grain boundaries and triple junctions were free of melts and other inclusions
that could cause light scattering. Optical characterization revealed strong excitation
around 460 nm and sharp red emissions corresponding to the ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₁ (∼580 nm)
and ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₂ (∼620 nm) transitions of Eu³⁺. The fluorescence lifetimes of Eu³⁺:FAP
and Eu³⁺:S-FAP were 0.5 and 0.87 ms, respectively. These results demonstrate the
potential of transparent red-emitting Eu³⁺-doped fluorapatite ceramics for solid-state
    lighting and biophotonics.
