(abstract)

We comment on the clockwise/counterclockwise assignment of the spin orientation in noble-metal (111) Rashba surface states discussed by Matsui et al. We point out that an apparent discrepancy between their assignment and that in previous reports can be understood by distinguishing the direction of the spin angular momentum from that of the spin magnetic moment. This distinction is important for comparing spin textures reported by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
