(abstract)

Near-infrared (NIR) luminescence phosphor have great potential in food analysis and bio-imaging; therefore, a development of efficient NIR phosphor is in a high demand. In this work, the Bi3+ sensitized NIR luminescence nanophosphors Gd2MoO6:Yb were successfully synthesized with a solvothermal reaction technique. The luminescence property was evaluated with not only photoluminescence (PL) and PL excitation (PLE) spectra and also the time-resolved PL spectra with different temperature. To understand the PL mechanism, furthermore, an electronic structure was investigated with DFT calculation. The GMO:Bi,Yb showed NIR luminescence due to the 4f-4f transition of Yb3+ under the UV light excitation, and the luminescence was sensitized by Bi3+ ions doping. From the PL spectra in visible region, the intensity was also enhanced by Bi3+ doping; however, the additional peak was not observed, which means that the enhancing mechanism was not explained by general enhancing mechanism. The time-resolved PL spectra, wavelength-dependent PLE spectra and theoretical calculation of GMO:Bi confirmed that the MMCT transition between Mo6+ and Bi3+ ions contributed to its enhancement. The perspective in this study about enhancing mechanism using MMCT transition between Bi3+ and Mo6+ was useful to develop an efficient Yb3+-doped NIR luminescence phosphor.
