## Title

- title: 'Polymorphism in high-temperature GeS2: identification and characterization
    of two distinct polymorphs'
  title_type: original
  lang: en

## Description

- description: "High-temperature (HT-) GeS2,a promising layered 2D material, has long
been\r\nconsidered a single crystallographic phase. Here, we report the definitive
identification\r\nof two distinct polymorphs, designated Polymorph A and B. A
comprehensive\r\nstructural and optical characterization revealed their contrasting
properties.\r\nX-ray diffraction analysis showed that while both polymorphs possess
a layered\r\nstructure, their fundamental stacking periodicities are significantly
different,\r\nwith Polymorph B being approximately 6.1% shorter than that of Polymorph
A.\r\nFurthermore, their Raman spectra, which primarily probe intra-layer vibrations,\r\nare
completely dissimilar. Intriguingly, Polymorph A aligns with the crystallographically\r\nestablished
structure, while the Raman spectrum of Polymorph B\r\nmatches that widely reported
in the literature. This finding resolves a long-standing\r\ndiscrepancy where
crystallographic and spectroscopic reports have likely\r\nbeen examining different
polymorphs unknowingly. Despite these pronounced\r\nstructural differences in
both inter-layer stacking and intra-layer arrangements,\r\ntheir optical band
gaps were found to be nearly identical at ~ 3.32 eV. This work\r\nnecessitates
a fundamental reassessment of the GeS2 material system and highlights\r\nthe complex
interplay between structure and electronic properties in this\r\nlayered 2D material."
