Bright Lanthanide III Triboluminescence despite Low Photoluminescence, and Dual Triboluminescence and Mechano‐Responsive Photoluminescence

MDR Open Deposited

Bright triboluminescence (TL) of lanthanideIII dinuclear complexes was observed regardless of their photoluminescence (PL) efficiencies under UV irradiation. A β-diketonate ligand with tert-butyl groups (tmh) was incorporated to quench the EuIII-centered PL through ligand-to-metal charge transfer state, while tmh provides efficient photosensitization effect for TbIII ions. TL intensities of EuIII and TbIII complexes were in the same order even though the PL quantum yields dif-fered by > 50 times. Nanomechanical tests revealed the characteristic smooth load-displacement profiles, which would be ideal to accumulate the deformation right before the breakage of the crystals. TL/PL color difference was also observed in a heterodinuclear TbIII/EuIII complex, and further grinding gave mechanochromic luminescence (MCL), being the first ex-ample of TL-MCL-active lanthanideIII coordination system. The photophysical properties before/during/after grinding were investigated and correlated with the crystallographic data of powders and single crystals.
